Mastering the Art of Bad News: A six-step approach for training and development leaders

As L&D professionals, we love sharing wins - but what about when projects don't go as planned? In my recent article for Association for Talent Development (ATD), I outline a research-backed framework for navigating those difficult conversations:


1. Prepare your audience (our brains react 5x more negatively to bad news!)

2. Rehearse confident delivery

3. Be present and focused

4. Convey benevolent intent

5. Explain without justifying

6. Create a sense of urgency


The ability to communicate effectively during challenging situations is what separates good leaders from great ones. This skill isn't just about damage control - it's about building trust, demonstrating accountability, and creating opportunities for growth.
